Animal Nutrition & Feed Manufacturing
Summerlane boasts excellent degrees of experience and expertise in the animal nutrition and feed manufacturing industry. We have been involved in this field for over two decades, and currently formulate and manufacture a range of specialised products used in livestock and other animals’ feeds. We are practically involved in constructing developing, and managing large scale commercial animal feed factories in South Africa and Botswana.
As at 2021, we formulate feed rations for more than 20 commercial feedlots with a combined capacity of over 100 000 animals. Our clients are spread throughout southern Africa, but concentrated in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
Our vast experience gives us in-depth understanding of every integral part of the value chain. We have built durable relationships with many key role-players which allow us to partner for success.

Business Planning & Development
We provide business planning and development mostly to agri-businesses. Planning is structured as follows:
Planning:
- Planning invariably starts with in-depth market research to gauge any project’s viability.
- We conduct detailed costing and budgeting for production and construction processes, including timelines for construction and implementation.
- We compile a valuation and financial model for the earmarked project to ascertain profitability scenarios. All relevant data is consolidated into a feasibility model that forms the cornerstone of our recommendations during the development phase.
Once planning is complete, we enter the development phase where we assist managers in coordinating all key functions to ensure a project’s timely and successful development.

Commodity Trading
Physical commodity trading forms a large part of Summerlane’s overall business volume. This division integrates well with the overall business, as a variety of the traded commodities also form part of the raw materials used for the manufacturing of livestock feeds. Our footprint stretches over most of southern Africa, including most SADC countries.
Recently, Summerlane expanded is range of products in the agri-market, including fertilisers and baseline chemicals used to produce granular composites. The trading scope is wide, covering the bulk of physical agricultural commodities, including grains and their by-products, and beans and their by-products such as oil and oil cake.
Our years of experience include extensive dealings with industry logistics, giving us a keen understanding and competitive advantage in the field.

Mentorship Programs
Summerlane provides project-based mentorship programmes for smaller-scale farmers. In most instances, we assist project financiers in monitoring and implementation.
These programmes’ chief objective is to build independent and sustainable farming operations in a reasonable timespan. We help build effective skills in planning, finance, analysis, budgeting and practical operations, alongside an efficient business culture.
For crop farmers and horticulturalists, we emphasise key aspects. These include weather, soil and trend analysis, marketing, cultivar selection and crop cycles, as well as optimal application for fertilisers, pesticides and other inputs. For processing and animal production, we focus on detailed business and production planning and budgeting to increase profit margins.

Project Management
Summerlane has a diverse set of experience and knowledge in managing farming operations and agri-processing. This set is contained in employees who have established greenfield operations and/or taken over management of existing projects, and it covers financial and overall production in agri-business.
We are rarely contracted to fully manage an existing operation. Normally, clients request that we examine a specific business area, whether financial or operational. We conduct investigations within the defined parameters and submit a formal report to the client. The client then decides whether interventions are needed at management level, by means of management contract, or by means of consultation based on deliverables.
If a solution is outside of our scope, we source expert advice from our large network.

Transport Solutions
Transport Solutions are integral to Summerlane’s business. Our fleet comprises ‘Tautliner’ combinations and transports a variety of products in bulk throughout South Africa’s major routes.
It is essential that we maintain our fleets at high standards to maintain legal and operational control, and to provide quality service to clients. We regularly monitor drivers to gauge progress and performance. We employ several security measures, including monitoring our fleet to ensure our cargo is safe and secure.
Our transport arm synergises with the rest of our business as it provides an internal capability to transport goods, which reduces overheads. Our extended contacts and industry involvement allows us to broker transport contracts.
